We are thankful

We know the thoughts and prayers of many in Effingham County are with the family who are having to endure the unthinkable loss of three children at once.

We see evidence each day of how quickly our lives can be over and last week’s horrific accident is another stark reminder of that fact.

For those of us fortunate enough to be surrounded by loved ones this Thanksgiving, we know there will tighter hugs given and a special thanks for our multitude of blessings.

As you say your prayers of thanks, also take a moment to remember the tanker truck driver involved in this accident.

It appears the wreck was no fault of his. The sights of that day, however, will likely remain with him for years.

We should also give thanks for the basic goodness and generosity of people. That generosity and desire to help has been evident from the online donations made over a short period to help this family. Almost $50,000 had been donated by Monday afternoon.

Effingham County residents have much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving day, and each day.

This county has much to offer, including a large number of people with a hardworking, volunteer spirit.

Some of the many generous volunteers can be seen in our churches and food pantries, packing Thanksgiving food boxes for others in need. Others can be seen working with youth at a recreation ball field or serving on a charitable organization board.

Gracious volunteers can also be found spending their time passing along the history of the county at the Effingham Museum and Living History site.

These volunteers are a true asset to Effingham County and we are thankful they have a passion to share the story of Effingham.

We are also thankful for our readers, and wish you all a happy and blessed Thanksgiving.
