A Rincon woman has been arrested on fraud related charges.

Bettye Medders was arrested on Nov. 5 when it was discovered she had made multiple fraudulent purchases over the Internet, Rincon Police Chief Phillip Scholl said.

“These purchases were made using multiple stolen credit cards, with the card holders residing in states as far away as California,” Scholl said.

The purchases included lap top computers, flat screen televisions, jewelry, furniture, and other items with high resale value, police reported. They were all made through online retailers.

The items were recovered from Medders’ Rincon residence.

“Some of the items were scheduled to be delivered out of the country, and were believed to be going to Ghana, Africa,” Scholl said.

“The Rincon Police Department would like to remind everyone to pay particular attention to transactions on their credit cards, debit cards,” Scholl said. “During the holiday season, the police department has noticed an increase in fraud reports, as people do not notice fraudulent expenditures until days or weeks later.”

Scholl said everyone should also check their credit report which can be obtained through the major credit bureaus annually at no cost.

Medders was charged with two counts each of felony charges of forgery, financial transaction card fraud, financial ID theft, financial ID fraud and theft by deception.

Medders is awaiting arraignment, with possible additional charges following.
