Effingham Sheriff: Bullet accidentally discharged breaks mirrors in two houses

From incident reports at the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office:

Jan. 5: Deputies collected a small dog with a large wound on its neck and took it to the Effingham Animal Hospital. Dove Lane in the Springfield area.

Jan. 7: The tailgate was stolen from a pickup truck on Rosehill Drive in the Rincon area.

Jan. 8: A deputy checked the tag of a suspicious vehicle on Central Avenue at Heidt Landing Road in the Guyton area. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license.

Jan. 9: A resident of the Rincon area said someone in Miami has been using her identity to open credit cards and other financial accounts. She said her aunt and cousin live at the address in Miami.

Jan. 9: A resident of Sand Hill Road in the Guyton area said her identity was used, without her permission, to rack up more than $2,000 in charges on three accounts in Florida.

Jan. 9: Some items were stolen from a garage on Forest Haven Drive in the Rincon area, while the homeowners slept in the adjacent house.

Jan. 11: Deputies found an open door next to Southern Charm Jewelry, on Old River Road in the Bloomingdale area. No one was inside and there appeared to be no damage to the building.

Husband blamed

Jan. 11: A woman said her estranged husband stole her minivan from Shari Drive in the Guyton area. She said the van starts with a screw driver “as a result of her husband’s previous endeavors.” She was told to go to Magistrate Court.

Jan. 11: A mailbox was stolen from a new house on Saratoga Drive in the Springfield area.

Mirrors broken

Jan. 11: A resident of Rogers Drive in the Springfield area said he was cleaning a .40-caliber handgun when the gun accidentally discharged, going through the wall of his house and hitting a neighbor’s house, stopping in a closet. The bullet went through mirrors in both houses.

Jan. 12: A resident of the Guyton area said he lost his wallet, which contained $44 cash.

Jan. 12: Some items were stolen from a trailer covered with a plastic tarp at Georgia Pacific.

Welcome home

Jan. 13: A racial epithet was spray painted four or five times on a residence on Lazy Lagoon Court in the Bloomingdale area. A man was in the process of signing a lease to move into the house.

Dog fight

Jan. 14: A resident of Pine Drive in the Bloomingdale area said her neighbor was mad because he’d been fined $800 for dogs at large. She said the neighbors brought their dog to her fence, on a chain, and when the dogs began to fight through the fence, the neighbor stabbed her and her dog with a screw driver.

Jan. 14: Residents of Fifth Street in the Meldrim area said a bottle of hydrocodone was missing from their house, after a cleaning lady and her friend were there.

Jan. 15: A deputy answered a call about a 3-year-old child yelling for help on Red Fern Court in the Springfield area. The child was OK when the deputy arrived. He apparently was crying earlier because he wasn’t able to play pool.

Jan. 15: A vehicle that was stuck in a ditch and blocking traffic on Paddleford Drive in the Rincon area was towed.

Jan. 15: A resident of Stagecoach Avenue in the Guyton area said he loaned his one-man boat to a man in June to go fishing. He said the man hasn’t returned the boat and can’t be reached.

Jan. 15: A dog that was chasing a cat damaged a vehicle on Barrister Circle in the Guyton area. The paint was scratched and the bumper had chew marks.

Jan. 15: A resident of Jennifer Circle in the Rincon area said he lost his driver’s license.

Jan. 15: A rifle was missing from a house on Ladessie Zeigler Road in the Guyton area. On Jan. 11 at the same address, a deputy stood by while a man retrieved his belongings from the house.

Loud party

Jan. 16: A resident of Saddleclub Way in the Guyton area who had been warned about loud music earlier in the evening and also last May was arrested for disturbing the peace and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. He was threatened with a stun gun.

Jan. 16: A couple who were separating couldn’t agree on how to divide their possessions. They were told to go to Magistrate Court. Old Dixie Highway S. in the Springfield area.

Sonny dearest

Jan. 16: An intoxicated man who threatened to kill his mother was arrested for public drunkenness and terroristic threats and acts. Shawnee Road in the Springfield area.

Jan. 16: A resident of Roebling Road in the Bloomingdale area said a man has been harassing her, getting items out of the shed beside her house.

Jan. 16: A resident of the Rincon area said someone opened an account with Comcast in Atlanta using her identity without her permission, charging $982.

Jan. 16: Someone destroyed a mailbox on Low Ground Road in the Guyton area, for the second time in about four months.

Jan. 16: A couple argued because he went out with friends the night before. The woman said she locked the man out of the house and he beat and kicked the door.

Hungry cat

Jan. 16: A resident of Plantation Drive in the Rincon area was bitten by a stray cat that was fighting her dog for his food. She said the cat is usually friendly.

Jan. 16: A deputy stopped a vehicle on Bay Road at Old River Road in the Meldrim area because it had no brake lights. The driver was arrested for possession of methamphetamine.

Jan. 17: A resident of Springfield Road said a man she doesn’t want on her property keeps coming by her house. He was accused of opening a gate and letting out cattle. He was given a trespass warning.

Jan. 18: A resident of Lakeshore Drive in the Guyton area reported a suspicious vehicle. A man driving a silver BMW told the resident that he was just looking around, then hit the gas and left in a hurry. The resident got the license tag number.

Jan. 19: Deputies and Guyton Police responded to a call about an aggressive pit bull running loose on Magnolia Street Extension in Guyton. The dog scratched the ear of a goat that was tied up at the edge of the woods. The officers found the dog’s owner, who put the dog inside.

Jan. 20: A resident of a trailer park on Old Augusta Road S. in the Rincon area complained that a motorcycle rider drives by fast and revs his engine loudly. A deputy checked and said the motorcycle didn’t sound loud to him. He advised the motorcycle owner of the county noise ordinance.

Jan. 21: Parties on Seventh Street in the Meldrim area argued over ownership of a storage building. A couple going through a divorce and the property owner were the interested parties. The company that installed the building said it would get a court order.

Jan. 21: A deputy stood by while a Springfield Police officer did a search of a vehicle at Laurel Street and Ga. 21.

Free babysitter

Jan. 21: A 19-year-old resident of Little McCall Road in the Guyton area said her daughter’s uncle is harassing her by telephone because she won’t pay him for babysitting her daughter.

Jan. 23: A resident of Thoroughbred Drive in the Guyton area said she believes several people who were living with her returned toys and household items that were bought during the holidays to Walmart for cash.

Jan. 24: A deputy had to brake sharply to avoid hitting a pickup truck that pulled in front of him on Ga. 119 S. in the Guyton area. The deputy stopped the vehicle, which was weaving all over the road. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license and failure to maintain lane.

Close enough

Jan. 24: Someone left a treadmill near the garage doors of a house on Mustang Drive in the Guyton area. The homeowner said he didn’t order it and thinks it was delivered to his house by mistake. He moved it toward the end of his drive near the curb.

A deputy told him that if no one picked it up the next day, the Sheriff’s Office would pick it up.

Liar, liar

Jan. 24: A deputy responded to a call about a car in a ditch on Hodgeville Road in the Guyton area. A man who was near the car was arrested for driving under the influence-less safe, driving with a suspended license and open container.

The man said he was a passenger in the car and that the driver ran off, but a deputy didn’t buy his story.
