
Sanford Underwood
Pooler — Mr. Sanford Underwood, 93, passed away Friday, August 14, 2015, at Hospice of Savannah.
Mr. Underwood was retired from Union Camp Corporation, was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in WWII and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
Survivors include his children, Gene Underwood of Meldrim, Sonny Underwood of Rincon, Carolyn Fields of Rincon and Betty Underwood of Texas; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 18, in the funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests, donations be made toward funeral expenses.

Helen Aiken Thompson
Rincon — Helen Aiken Thompson, 91, passed away at Effingham County Hospital on Monday, Aug. 10, 2015.
A native of Randolph County, she was the wife of the late Ralph C. Thompson and the daughter of Guy Lawson Aiken and Ethel Russell Aiken, both deceased. She retired from Kiser Roth Industries.
She is survived by two sons, R.C. Thompson and wife Janice, of Georgia and Frank L. Thompson, also of Georgia; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one-great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.
A graveside service was held at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church Cemetery, 4178 Mount Hermon Rock Creek Road, Graham, N.C. Aug. 15.

Edward Leroy Howell
Bloomingdale — Mr. Edward Leroy Howell, Jr., 75, passed away Tuesday, Aug.11, 2015, at Tattnall Healthcare Center in Reidsville, Ga.
Mr. Howell was a construction worker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Howell; son, Russell Howell of Rincon; daughters, Janelle Hancock of Rincon, Kimberly Sharpe of Rincon and Mona Fail of Bloomingdale; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Funeral Services were held on Thursday, Aug. 13, in the chapel of the funeral home with internment following at the Springfield Annex.

Mary Hundley Harper Turner
Springfield – Mary H. Turner, 64, died at Hospice Savannah on Aug. 11, 2015, after a long struggle with cancer.
Mary was born on March 4, 1951, in Martinsville, Va. She graduated with an Associate’s Degree from Saint Mary’s College in Raleigh, N.C. She later pursued a Bachelor of Education Degree and later a Master Degree of Education from the University of Tennessee. She taught in Tennessee as an elementary school teacher for a few years before relocating to Savannah, Ga. She taught in Chatham County for two years before taking a teaching job in Effingham County. While in Effingham County she pursued an Education Specialist Degree from Georgia Southern University. She taught English Language Arts at Effingham High School before transferring to Effingham County Middle School where she retired after 31 years of service.
She was a former member of the Springfield United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She later became an active member of the Jerusalem Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles B. and Margaret B. Harper, and a brother, William (Bill) Harper.
She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Norman V. Turner of Springfield, Ga.; two daughters, Audrey T. (James) Breda of Springfield, Ga. and Amy T. (Gary) Hart of Guyton, Ga.; one grandson, Grayson J. Breda of Springfield, Ga.; a brother and sister-in-law, Blain (Sue) Harper; a sister, Charlotte Harper all of Charlottesville, Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Meg (Dr. Bruce Dain) Harper of Salt Lake, Utah; three nephews, Austin Hall, Matthew and Paul Harper of Charlottesville, Va.; her mother-in-law, Mary Z. Turner of Springfield, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Jocelyn T. (Richard) Porter of Guyton, Ga.
Funeral services were held on Aug. 15 at Jerusalem Lutheran Church.
Burial followed in Union Cemetery in Springfield, Ga.
