LOOKING BACK

Aug. 15, 1909: Sand Hill Missionary Baptist Church was organized on this date. The first building was built on a half-acre tract of land donated by L.B.Nease just north of the Sand Hill (Woods) Cemetery. The first pastor was the Rev. S.S. Bland. Charter members were Allison and Emily Woods, L.B. Nease, Josh and Mary Woods, Zarah and Indy Davis, Mrs. Rebecca Woods, Henry and Illa Woods, Milton Woods, Benjamin Crosby and Joe Crosby. In 1930, Mrs. Harriet (Ms.Hattie) Davis donated two acres of land on which the present building now stands.

Aug. 18, 2005: The Georgia Salzburger Society, based at historic Ebenezer in Effingham County, unveiled plans for a set of porcelain dolls depicting Salzburger children as a fundraiser for the upcoming Heritage Days. Proceeds from the dolls would be used to fund the printing of the remaining Detailed Reports, the 18 diaries of John Martin Boltzius, the minister who led the religious freedom-seeking Salzburgers to Ebenezer in 1731.

Aug. 31, 1976: Effingham County Commission Chairman Guerry Burns defeated Charles Usher in the Democratic Primary runoff on this date. Burns received 55.1 percent of the vote. Burns faces no Republican opposition in November. More than 10,000 voters cast ballots to decide four county commission and two school board races. Winning commission seats were R.S. Jaudon, Bobby Murrray, R.J. Page and Burns. H. Grady Sherood and Reggie McDaniel won school board races. None face Republican opposition in the fall.
