BACK TO SCHOOL BLOWOUT A SUCCESS

Large crowds turned out for the fourth annual Back to School Blowout held on July 28 at Effingham County High School.

The free event offered school supplies, hair cuts, immunizations, raffle drawings and a host of information for students and families.

Organizer Destiny Bradshaw of Effingham Connect estimated almost 1,500 people attended and said 880 children were served.

The function included 34 vendors and was organized with the help of about 90 volunteers.

“We couldn’t have done it without them,” Bradshaw said.

Also included was a free meal.

“Nick Springer with Treutlen House and his team of boys grilled hotdogs,” Bradshaw said.

Walmart provided the hotdogs and buns, Peach State provided

1,000 bottles of water, Coca Cola provided water and soda, Domino’s Pizza fed the volunteers and vendors, Manna House provided crackers, cookie and donuts and Amerigroup Community Care provided a hydration station for those waiting in line and popcorn machine, Bradshaw said.

Barbers and stylists provided 140 haircuts — staying an hour beyond the stated two hours.

“They were dedicated to the cause,” Bradshaw said. “I’m so appreciative of all.”
