Emma is a furry, 3-month-old kitten that’s available for adoption from the Effingham County animal shelter.
She was turned in at the shelter along with her mother. She purrs easily. “She’s real laid-back, very calm,” said Jessica Kicklighter, a kennel assistant.
Kennel coordinator Lorna Shelton has been named director of the shelter, since Adam Kobek’s recent resignation from the county. Amy Hamilton remains a kennel coordinator.
Also up for adoption this week is a small brown puppy, which came in with five siblings. The litter has three boys and three girls.
“He probably will be energetic,” Kicklighter said of the dog, which is believed to be a mix of Chihuahua, Pomeranian and Jack Russell. “He’ll stay fairly small.”
Those are not the only puppies available for adoption this week. “We have lots and lots of puppies,” Kicklighter said.
The fee to adopt animals from the shelter is $50 for dogs and $40 for cats, which includes shots.
Animals must receive a rabies and a “DAPP” shot — for distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza and parvovirus.
Someone who adopts can take the animal home but must agree to bring the animal back on a Monday or Thursday to get its shots.
Adopting families also must pledge to have the animal spayed or neutered within 30 days.
The shelter’s phone number is 912-754-2109. It is open for adoptions Mondays and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
