Some of the good things going on

• It’s amazing what can be accomplished when people work together for a common goal.

A group of determined, faithful volunteers managed to start a Family Promise chapter in Effingham and have now continued their work by establishing a day center.

Local congregations, with help from all ages, are providing some stability and comfort to area homeless families through this organization.

The day center gives these families a place to shower, get help with a job and provides an area for the children to play. It also provides an address.

Having an address sounds doesn’t sound all that important. However, try finding a job, or getting a driver’s license, or even being able to get your tax refund without one.

Effingham County should be proud of the volunteer spirit so many here possess.

Family Promise still needs the help of the community to continue their good works.

If you’d like to know how you can help, give them a call at 912-268-0373.

• Another example of volunteers working together is the annual Effingham County Fair and Parade.

Putting on this large event each year is not easy and the Effingham County Fair Committee members deserve a thanks.

• The City of Springfield made a smart move in buying a burned out home and lot.

The bargain purchase keeps the city from having to go through the nuisance ordinance procedure and then paying to tear the house down.

The owners could not pay for the home to be demolished or rebuilt, so this is a win-win for both.

The city will now own a lot across from Ulmer Park that can be put to public use.
