In case you missed it — and it would have been hard to do — a number of people are quite upset about some trees.

Plans to build a gas station at Walmart call for the cutting down of at least one old live oak, and likely more, much to the dismay of a pretty noisy crowd.

The work is expected to start in February.

A petition was started lickety-split to save the tree and had almost 1,800 signatures by Oct. 6.

The petition was followed shortly by a Facebook page where people can stay updated. The page had close to 1,000 likes as of this week.

People are commenting in droves online over the upcoming demise of the trees.

Folks are not only upset at losing a beautiful old tree, they are bemoaning the fact that it is for yet another gas station along a roadway already full of them.

We don’t know if the Save The Tree petition will bear fruit. City officials don’t appear thrilled at the loss of the tree either, and have said some trees will be replaced.

There doesn’t seem much room for compromise. The trees are removed or they are not. Once gone, these old gems are lost forever. Replacing them with new trees is fine and good, but there is no true replacement for Georgia’s state tree.

• We love how Effingham County Schools make checking out that first library book a special thing for pre-K students.

As part of Pre-K Week students had stories read by special guests and then were allowed to pick out their first school library books.

The day was a memory maker and we believe the students will fondly remember the day and that hopefully they will grow a love of reading.

• Thanks to the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce for working so hard to bring the community another Oktoberfest. The festival was great fun for adults and the kiddos. Thanks.

• We’re glad to see the Moon River Studios, formerly Medient Studios, is beginning to advertise job openings. We are also glad a company with such a good reputation as Choate Construction has signed on as construction manager for the project.

We are still a bit leery but, with Choate onboard, maybe some money is on the way to get the project going full speed ahead.
