Two new marquees were installed on the Mars Theatre in Springfield this week, letting passers-by know about coming attractions and answering one of the few remaining needs at the historic venue that opened in April.

The City of Springfield paid $14,200 for the signs, which Tommy Deadwyler, director of cultural affairs, said was the only complaint from citizens about the renovated theater, which opened April 25.

The signs will help people who are not Internet-savvy and others who need to be reminded about upcoming events, he said.

Deadwyler has said the signs will pay for themselves with the new business they attract.

The letters went up on Thursday. Deadwyler said neon still has to be put up so the signs will be lit. He expects the neon to be added within the next week.

“People have been asking for them,” he said of the signs.

The marquees were made by Neon Design & Sign of Statesboro, the same company that also installed the neon signs on front of the building.

The money came from special-purpose, local-option sales tax funds.
