JULY 26, 2003 — More than 100 Effingham County residents and officials debated a $15 million wastewater treatment plan earlier this week during an often-tempestuous, three-hour meeting at the County Administrative Complex. Commissioners have been working on the plan for months and already spent $3 million for a tract of land near Rincon where the treatment plant will be located. The $12 million plant will be paid for with a low-interest loan dministered by the state Environmental Protection Division.

JULY 21, 2004 — Effingham County Commissioner Gregg Howze’s second hearing before the State Ethics Commission concerning his involvement in a land deal with local school officials has been delayed indefinitely. A hearing planned for last Friday was canceled because of conflicts in the schedules of several lawyers representing some of those slated to appear before the commission in Atlanta. The State Ethics Commission, which considers complaints about possible violations of the state Ethics in Government Act, deadlocked 2-2 at a May 10 hearing about whether the Howze matter should be investigated.

JULY 22, 2005 — Savannah Yacht Co. is bringing 50 new jobs, with salaries ranging from $35,000 to $85,000, as part of a new $10 million manufacturing plant at Effingham County Industrial Park. Three former executives from the Knoxville, Tenn.-based, billion-dollar Sea Ray boat-building company said they hope to begin production by the beginning of 2006 after installing equipment and modifying a 50,000-square-foot spec building.

JULY 26, 2006 — After more than a month without a chief executive, the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority has named John Henry its new CEO. The IDA board voted at its July 20 meeting to extend the offer. Henry accepted Monday. Henry has served as project manager for the IDA for the past 14 months.
