The Effingham County animal shelter has six mixed-breed puppies available for adoption this week.

There are four boys and two girls, all from the same litter. Bill Cowan, adoption coordinator, guesses that they are about six months old.

Each has its own personality, which can be seen when they’re taken out to the patio area to play. People considering adopting animals can visit with them in the patio area.

Visitors to the shelter must wear closed-toe shoes if they’re going to see the animals.

Also available for adoption this week is Peaches, a male, orange and white cat that was picked up by sheriff’s deputies. Helping out Pets in Effingham (HOPE) will pay to have him neutered.

The shelter has started a new policy: animals must receive rabies and five-way shots before they can leave the facility. The five-way shots protect against distemper, hepatitis, kennel cough, parainfluenza and parvo.

The shots are given on Monday and Thursday mornings. Someone who adopts an animal must wait until the next time shots are given before being allowed to take the animal home.

Adoption fees are $50 for a dog and $40 for a cat. The prices include shots.

Adopting families must pledge to have the animal spayed or neutered within 30 days.

The shelter is at 307 Ga. 119 S. in Springfield. Its phone number is 912-754-2109.

Its Web page is: http://www.effinghamcounty.org/DepartmentsAF/AnimalShelter.aspx.

Go to the drop-down list under “Departments A-F” and go to “Animal Shelter” and then “Adoption Page” to see information about some of the dogs and cats that are available.
