The sad story that at times consumed Effingham County since one awful morning in 2008 appears to be at an end for most of us.
The long ride, however, is long from over for Craig Heidt and his remaining family.
Barring a miracle, Heidt appears most likely to spend the rest of his life in prison.
The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday upheld Heidt’s convictions in the deaths of his father, Philip Heidt and brother, Carey Heidt and the shooting of his mother.
He was sentenced to two life terms plus 85 years.
No matter how you feel about Heidt’s guilt or innocence, the fact remains he is not alone in receiving a life sentence.
Philip Heidt and Carey Heidt got theirs on a sticky summer night.
Linda Heidt not only lost a husband and a son forever but also has to live knowing another son has lost his freedom.
The one remaining Heidt son, Chris Heidt, is now an only child in many ways.
The children and grandchildren have had part of their futures stolen.
For those in the family left behind, we cannot imagine the heartache that will be with them for the rest of their lives.
Many in the Effingham community have been impacted by the deaths of two highly respected men and at having to see a family torn.
Many have suffered the pain of losing loved ones in a sudden or horrific manner.
This family, however, has had their family woes open to all. In the courtroom, in the news and on national television.
Most of us do not have that added to our grief.
It takes a strength that would break many.
Whether you feel justice has been served or not, we cannot help but realize that no one is a winner here.
Lives and hearts have been broken. There’s no easy fix for that. We do hope that at least some comfort can be found.
