A man apparently shot and killed himself this afternoon in Effingham County, as officers tried to arrest him on a federal warrant.
Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals went to a house on Cobbleton Drive, off Ebenezer Road north of Rincon, to arrest the man, according to Sheriff’s spokesman David Ehsanipoor.
He barricaded himself in the house in a brief standoff before officers heard a single gunshot inside the house.
They went inside and found the man dead from a gunshot wound to the head.
The man was wanted for violating bond, Ehsanipoor said. The original charges were from a Drug Enforcement Administration case in Columbus, Ohio, for mail fraud, possession of anabolic steroids and unlawful possession of a gun.
An autopsy was to be performed tomorrow. The identity of the man was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
