Sheriff’s reports

From incident reports at the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office:

Feb. 24: A woman said her bull mastiff dog bit her as she tried to break up a fight between it and her boxer dog. She was bitten a few days before by the boxer. Hawk Hammock Drive in the Springfield area.

Feb. 27: An off-duty Richmond Hill police officer stopped a vehicle that almost struck two other vehicles head-on and ran off the right shoulder. The driver was arrested for drunken driving-refusal, failure to maintain lane, open container, drugs legal when kept in original container, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a drug-related object and driving with a suspended license. Old Augusta Road and Fort Howard Road.

March 1: A motorcycle rider reported nearly having an accident with a vehicle in the Cypress Drive area. He was cited for driving while license withdrawn, violation of intermediate license and no proof of insurance.

March 2: A man said his cousin burned some land and damaged his 1956 Packard Clipper car. Fourth Street Extension in the Guyton area.

March 2: A man said a female relative burned trash and yard debris on Beebe Road in the Springfield area. He said the fire spread 100 yards and damaged 10 of his vehicles.

March 2: A man said his neighbor’s two large dogs attacked his Jack Russell, causing a large open wound on its chest. Old Oak Road in the Guyton area.

March 5: A small black dog scratched the front door of Bible Lutheran Church and chewed the weather stripping on the door. Blue Jay Road in the Guyton area.

March 6: A man said someone dumped several pickup truck loads of trash and debris on his property on Heidt Road in the Guyton area. A man’s name was listed on some of the trash. He said he didn’t dump it but that he would clean it up.

March 7: Three trucks that were “mud bogging” became stuck on property on Hodgeville Road in the Guyton area. The property owner said they were trespassing. A man who rents a house on the property said he believes they had permission to be there.

March 8: A deputy checking a report of someone driving an all-terrain vehicle on the roadway tried to stop a man riding a dirt bike. The man fled, but was caught later. He was charged with driving with a suspended license and fleeing and attempting to elude an officer. Shady Oaks Lane Sandhill Road in the Eden area.

Guyton Police

From incident reports at the Guyton Police Department:

Feb. 3: A resident of Fifth Avenue said his mother “became very irritated and irate” because she wasn’t allowed to take part in an argument he was having with his wife. The man said his mother threw a shoe and a vase at him. She said he threw a can of Mountain Dew at her and missed.

Feb. 7: A woman was accused of shoplifting from the Dollar General store. A customer got her license plate number. When an officer went to her house, on Hidden Creek Drive, she denied shoplifting. She was given a criminal trespass warning and told not to return to the store.

Feb. 10: A man from Bloomingdale, who was driving a pickup truck, ran the stop sign at Ga. 119 and Ga. 17. He was arrested for failure to stop at a stop sign and driving without a license.

Feb. 11: A key and change were stolen from a vehicle on Hidden Creek Drive. The owner wasn’t sure if it was locked.

Feb. 15: A woman left her 2007 gold Lexus running when she went inside to visit relatives on Anderson Avenue. She said when she returned five minutes later, the car was gone, along with a pocketbook that cost $650, a cell phone, a tablet computer and debit card with $3,500 from her tax return.

About a half-hour later, a resident of Samuel Smalls Boulevard called police and said a gold Lexus was parked in his driveway. An officer went to the address and chased the driver of the car on foot, hitting him twice with a Taser, before subduing him.

The man said “his head was messed up” because he was drunk and high. He was arrested and charged with theft by receiving (auto), obstruction by fleeing, obstruction by resisting, possession of a drug-related object, possession of tools for commission of a crime, false name and financial transaction card theft.

An officer found the woman’s tablet in a water-filled ditch near where the car was found. The $3,500 she said was missing was not recovered.

Feb. 17: A resident of Brogdon Road said she left her garage door open during the day and someone went inside and scratched the trunk of her car with a penny. She said the penny was left on the trunk of her car, a 2002 Chevrolet Lumina. She said she “was so mad and not thinking straight” that she removed the penny before officers arrived. She asked for extra patrols in the area.

Springfield Police

From incident reports at the Springfield Police Department:

Feb. 27: A Springfield woman left her wallet on top of her vehicle at Enmark on Ga. 21 and drove away. It contained $300 cash and a prepaid debit card with $5,000 on it. She later found the wallet by the road, with its contents intact.

Feb. 27: Girl’s bicycle, valued at $200, stolen from yard on Laurel Point Drive.

Feb. 27: A woman living on E. Fourth Street argued with her granddaughter. The girl left on a bicycle, headed to her boyfriend’s house in Rincon. A passerby picked up the girl and brought her to the Sheriff’s Office, where she was turned over to her grandmother.

Feb. 28: An officer traveled to Chatham County to pick up a man wanted in Springfield for stealing a car in October.

March 1: A woman walking her dog on E. Madison Street said a bulldog from a house on N. Ash Street jumped its fence and attacked her dog. The owner of the bulldog said he would pay her dog’s vet bills.

March 1: A call about a noisy party led to a resident of Harvest Drive being charged with disorderly house and five juveniles being charged with underage drinking and hindering law enforcement officers. The juveniles refused to answer the door for officers.

March 2: A resident of Ash Street Extension and his soon-to-be ex-wife argued over custody of their children.
