SOUTH EFFINGHAM 43, CALVARY BAPTIST 38
Familiarity often breeds contempt. Bad blood. Rivalries. But hugs? The girls’ basketball teams at Calvary Baptist and South Effingham met for the third time in less than a month Saturday night in the South Effingham Holiday Tournament.
And as Calvary Baptist’s starting lineup was introduced, each player had a hug for South Effingham coach Katy Fleming.
The embraces are apropo. After all, Fleming coached every Cavalier starter a year ago in Savannah before accepting the South Effingham job this summer. The contempt came after the hugs in the rubber match between the two teams. South Effingham shut down Calvary sharpshooter Meghan Jones in the second half and held on to a slim lead in the final five minutes to defeat the Cavaliers 43-38.
The Mustangs (5-5) first played Calvary in late November, winning that game. But they lost to Fleming’s old team last week, part of a four-game losing streak they finally snapped Friday night with a win over Savannah Christian.
